WHAT IF OUR CHILDREN WERE IN CHARGE?

Thanks to the translation done by Sara Cremades González (teacher and philologist), you can read this article in English:

WHAT IF OUR CHILDREN WERE IN CHARGE?

How often have we as parents been tempted to allow our teenagers to do things «their own way».

This can be a good thing, as long as the consequences are manageable and they are never in danger. This would give them autonomy, they would learn to coexist with frustration (because things often go wrong) and it would increase their self-esteem.

But it can also be bad when they want to make all the decisions, including those concerning their health. Proof of this is the following case, as crude as it is real (the identifying data have been changed to preserve anonymity):

  • A 14-year-old boy was brought to my office with behavioural problems (he even sat in a window with his feet dangling out of it to get his mobile phone back), absenteeism, as well as his grades.
  • A year earlier, he had started to «fool around» with joints; today he is totally hooked on them.
  • Despite his young age, for some months he had been trying other much more harmful and addictive drugs (synthetic cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy).
  • On weekends and holidays, he often consumed alcohol, recognising that it was getting out of hand. Proof of this is that on several occasions he had ended up in the emergency room or in hospital.
  • He also has a problematic behaviour on social networks: SEXTING (exchange of «daring» or nude photos), denying the risks of this practice, both for his present and his future.
  • Surprisingly, he decides who his divorced parents can be with.
  • To top it all, he also decides on his treatment, whether he takes it or not, depending on his day.

But in a moment of emotional spontaneity, in tears, he exploded with the phrase: «I NEED DRUGS«.

From here there are two questions to be asked:

What could have happened in this child’s life to make him/her need to take drugs to cope with everyday life?

What is the role of parents in the face of this serious problem?

Here it is not enough to seek help until the child decides that he or she no longer wants to return because he or she does not like what he or she hears.

We are facing a volcano of symptoms and high-risk behaviours with a very poor prognosis.

Here the fundamental and basic key to rebuild piece-by-piece the «life» of this minor is the parents, they are not to blame for what is happening to their child, but they are responsible.

They should be the first to get treatment and look for someone to accompany them in the health, social and legal process that lies ahead.

It will not be easy or short; it may take months, LET’S HOPE THAT THEY COME IN TIME TO AVOID THIS ANNOUNCED DISASTER.
