LOS REINOS DE TAIFAS/THE KINGDOMS

ES LA HISTORIA DE UN JOVEN ADOLESCENTE, FUMADOR DE PORROS QUE VIVVÍA DONDE PODÍA Y QUE HABÍA INTENTADO QUITARSE LA VIDA.

Adolescente abandonado

THE KINGDOMS

Some time ago I had a 15 year old teenager in my practice who seemed to me to be extremely dangerous to himself: unkempt and dirty looking, unschooled, smoking joints since he was 12 years old and had already tried cocaine. He was with a group of older boys known to the police. Born into a poor family with separated parents, both with new children by their current partners. To pay for his use, he did petty theft, which he then exchanged for marijuana. He had grown up on the streets, he went out in the morning and nobody knew where he was going or where he was going to sleep that night.

When the 16-year-old partner wanted to leave him, he took out the knife he always carried and, in front of his colleagues, threatened to take his own life by cutting his wrists; in the end he ended up in hospital for several days.

I discussed this with the rest of the team and proposed contacting the social services in his town so that they could assess the case and, if they saw fit, take the appropriate measures. I wrote an email to the person in charge of minors, detailing the chaotic life of this child and showing my concern for his future. After two months without any news, and after a consultation with this boy who was still consuming and criminalising, I called the addressee of my email to ask him about the case.

To my surprise, he told me that he had received my message but that after consulting with his superior, they had decided not to do anything, not even to reply to me.

When I asked him why, he replied that I had not sent the information in the corresponding form. When I started to show my indignation and lack of professional empathy, my interlocutor hung up and the conversation ended.

For months I managed to get this adolescent to return to the clinic, sometimes to do a pregnancy test for the couple at the time or simply to talk, but over time the visits became longer and longer until he stopped coming.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if the priority had been the child, rather than the form.

But this is not a story of the past, it still happens every day:

– People are scheduled at a certain time, knowing that they will not be served until much later.

– Many public institutions are only open in the mornings, as if the public they have to serve only works in the afternoons.

– The banking sector is on a crusade to eliminate branches, where older people are sacrificed for the benefit of shareholders.

We continue to «crow» about how important people are while at the same time demanding that they adapt to a system that ignores and mistreats them.
