LOS TRAUMAS DE NUESTRA NIÑEZ – THE TRAUMAS OF OUR CHILDHOOD

THE TRAUMAS OF OUR CHILDHOOD

In the world of addictions there are two key questions:

  1. What is happening today in the life of the person in front of us?
  2. What is the origin (trigger) of their disease?

For the first question we usually have more or less plausible answers, which allow us to start walking towards the control of the problem, never towards the cure, because addictions are not cured. Personally, I have not smoked a cigarette for over 30 years, but I recognize that I am still addicted to nicotine, and that a single cigarette would bring me back to consuming 3 packs a day, which is what I used to smoke.

The answer to the second question is much more complicated and sometimes I even doubt that it can be answered:

  • It is heart-breaking to see a tough kid, fresh out of a detention centre where he has been held for over a year for his crimes, break down and start crying when he talks about the abuse he suffered at the age of five, from a friend of his parents.
  • It is impotence what you feel when a mature woman who has been on treatment for years without the desired results, answers this question amidst tears, commenting that at sixteen she was raped and that from her family the only support she received was a slap from her mother and a beating accompanied by insults from her older brother.
  • Often we also find that possible trigger in the traumatic separation of parents, where children become throwing weapons and are not looked at for their welfare, but in doing as much damage as possible to the other. The most extreme case is when one of the parents murders his children with the aim of making the other spouse suffer.

What is clear in these and many other cases is that if we do not work or refer the treatment of these triggers to other specialists, even if we manage to help them on a daily basis, the shadow of the relapse will always fly over them.
