THE THREE THINGS THAT ACTIVATE THE BRAIN

Some days ago I heard José Ramón Gamo, investigator and extraordinary communicator, talking about the three things that activate the brain: curiosity, necessity, and pleasure.

We live in the era of fast and no effort hedonism. Reading has always been one of the biggest pleasures of humankind. Thanks to it, we have the opportunity to discover unknown worlds and, page-by-page, they turn us into the main characters of incredible stories and adventures, making us laugh or cry.

All the imaginative potential of our brain is put towards the service of history, creating such a real ‘movie’ that not only excites, but also makes it difficult for us to come back to the real world (work, family, etc.).

Though nowadays, new technologies provide us with those colourful and fantastic worlds.

Now, we do not need to know how to read to interact with technologies that make us be the protagonist of the story.

Perseverance, effort, and frustration are unknown values for many teenagers that find refuge in the over-protection of their families, creating an ideal and unreal world, the ninis world (neither study nor work).

The problem, though, does not stop here. There are thousands of teenagers that have gone further, creating their worlds of fantasy without the necessity of a video game; they have found they virtual console game in the consumption of cannabis.

The problem appears when they come back to reality. Fortunately, this is something temporary and easy to solve; it is likened to smoking another joint in order to disconnect from something of which they want to escape.

And, like this, they remain more and more addicted, until they end up being unable to distinguish between fiction and reality, or suffering from a psychotic outbreak (first symptoms of a mental disease). It is something that is very serious, not only because it affects too many of our teenagers, but also because if we don’t act, they can move from being the future of our world to being a ballast to their families and society for the rest of their lives, ending up in crime, prostitution, or with a debilitating disease.

Being a parent is not just about procreating, but rather it includes dedicating the most important part of our lives to educate and care for our children, with the only main of watching them go look for their future. But when they don’t want to go and they are taking refuge in one of these fantastic cannabian worlds, we need to act.

In words of the juvenile judge D. Emilio Calatayud: “if they refuse to do it under civil action, we will have no choice but doing it under criminal action”.
