Thanks to the translation done by Sara Cremades González (teacher and philologist), you can read this article in English:

-THE TIMES WE LIVE IN-

A few days ago, doing a friend a favour, I met a young man in a public cafeteria. I have always said that the infinite majority of teenagers I saw were in front of me, forced and dragged by parents, social services or the justice system. This boy is the exception to the rule; he is a «white blackbird» that I have hardly seen in 15 years of work. The reason for interviewing me outside the consulting room is the stigma that still exists about the Units (U.C.A.) that help people who are ill due to an addiction, be it to a substance (cannabis, alcohol, cocaine…) or to a behaviour (addiction to mobile phones, social networks, video games).

This boy belongs to a generation where alcohol is legally forbidden for those under 18, but socially accepted by friends and family, the only thing he is asked to do is to «consume responsibly», an advertising phrase that came up in the conversation and that I honestly still don’t know what it means.

They belong to a generation that considers that smoking cannabis (joints) is a way to be with friends, but also to de-stress, reduce anxiety… and even not to get bored.

They are also convinced that the legalisation of consumption is imminent because of all the pressure from the media and some politicians.

Returning to my intelligent and loquacious interviewee, in our meeting he acknowledged:

  • He exercises almost every day, and not long ago he had the chance to join an elite team, but consumption robbed him of this opportunity.
  • He has always been a good student, but in the last academic year he has been failing all over the place. He attributes this to the time he has to work to pay for his «vices» instead of studying.
  • On a mental level, he commented on having had «some» episodes of going blank, or getting some «strange» idea in his head.
  • He also spoke of his mother’s displeasure when she discovered his drug use, and that he has never regained the «good feeling» he had with his parents. Now it is all mistrust and reproaches, so he tries to be as little as possible with the family to avoid conflict.

In reality my young colleague is looking for reasons strong enough to stop his use, HIS REASONS.

Sometimes we make the mistake of trying to help someone who is «clear» that they are not ill and therefore refuses our support.

It is also with the best of intentions that we predict dark, painful and criminal futures for consumers and then give him «home-made recipes» to overcome his illness.

I am convinced of my young friend’s good prognosis, especially because despite his age and justifications, he knows that his life and that of his family can improve.
