LOS QUE NO SALDRAN DE SUS HABITACIONES – THOSE WHO WILL NOT LEAVE THEIR ROOMS

THOSE WHO WILL NOT LEAVE THEIR ROOMS

We have reached August where we all relax, we no longer take into account the hours we sleep, watch television or play with our children. We want to forget the last school year because we are not sure if they have learned something or if they have passed because those were the academic guidelines.

We see in the news a large number of young offenders in the macro-parties or “botellones”, without restraint or masks, but far from worrying us, we are thankful that many of our teenagers have decided to remain confined to their rooms, and that gives us a lot of peace of mind in the face of the COVID’s contagion.

But that sense of peace can be the beginning of a big problem:

Whether we like it or not, it is normal for an adolescent to have an inner strength that incites him/her to relate to other peers in a face-to-face way. They need the group to socialise and forge their personality.

But:

– When he/she goes out of the house less and less, especially out of his/her room.

– When he/she gradually loses contact with his/her usual friends and even with his/her classmates.

– When he/she gives up any sport.

– When he/she finds it increasingly difficult to have breakfast, lunch or dinner with the family.

– When he/she sleeps more and more during the day and is awake at night.

– When he/she starts lying about how many hours he/she is connected.

In consultation I had a cool teenager who, when his parents showed him their concern about isolation, replied that his friends had started drinking alcohol and smoking joints, so he had decided to stay at home in order not to use. With his answer he blocked any parental arguments.

In view of the above, it would be advisable:

  1. A week before the start of the course, limit the timetable for connection and possession of technology. For example: «at 11 p.m., the Internet should be disconnected, mobile phones should be taken out of the rooms and all of them should be put on charge, and the video game console controls should be picked up».
  2. The emphasis will be on bringing back family lunches and dinners.
  3. Before the start of the course, the rules and limits of the use of technology should be reminded. I suggest not setting strict limits at the beginning, but it must be made very clear that technological time will depend on the academic results of each term.
  4. We will not pay any attention to protests or to the famous phrase «I’m bored», because it is in boredom that human beings hide their creativity.

The next article will be entitled:

«WHAT ARE WE BREEDING, ENTREPRENEURS, GENIUSES OR MELONS?».
