DRUG’S PHILANTHROPY: I AM INVITED!

Everyday when we are gathering information about a new patient and we arrive at the main issue, something strange happens; on the one hand, he or she claims a lower consumption than the real one, on the other hand, he tries to make us believe that what they are consuming is almost free: I am invited!

Evidently, if the quantities were real, they wouldn’t have come, because when they really were so low they did not need to ask for help.

In connection with the cost, I usually divide it into two parts:

  1. Biological cost: we are still convinced about the fact that any toxic substance that we ingest only has its immediate effects: tobacco=relaxing; alcohol=disinhibitor; cannabis=sedative; cocaine=stimulating, etc. However, with each consumption, our brain suffers a weakening that, as time goes by, makes us look like old people in a mental sense.
  2. Family and economic cost. Although as therapists we gather the information as our patient relates it, time later we discover the actual cost he is paying in exchange for some minutes of breakout. It’s like this that debts start showing up: credit cards, loans, relatives, friends, neighbours, fellows, etc. Not only hundreds but also thousands of euros. When this is revealed, it supposes an important shock for the family that really didn’t know what was happening, since the patient denied everything once and once again, hiding a debt with a higher one, in addition to a new consumption “in order to forget”.

Finally, in many cases the family ends up breaking up and dividing the debts, selling as a loss their job of a lifetime.

If the economic blow is big, the emotional shock is usually devastating for the relatives, who, in many cases, end up taking medicines.

Despite this scene, as real as apocalyptic, all these diseases have a treatment, but not a cure. People addicted to tobacco, as in my case, even after 30 years without smoking, if any time I try again I will get hooked one more time.

With teenagers is different:

If the interview is made with the appropriate conditions (relaxed, alone, guaranteeing confidence, not questioning anything he says, etc.) they normally have no problem in being honest, even if they consume 10 or 100 joints per week, since their immature brain works with different values than the adult one. At the same time this marvellous brain allows us achieve better and faster results than with adults, we really need parents to get involved in the treatment.

RECTIFYING A TEENAGER’S LIFE IS RELATIVELLY SIMPLE; DOING IT WITH AN ADULT IS COMPLICATED, BUT EVEN POSSIBLE.
